Gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea is a venereal disease caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It is passed from person to person through sexual activity including intercourse, oral sex, anal sex, intimate physical contact, sharing vibrators or other sex toys, or from mother to baby during birth. It usually affects the genital area, although the throat or anus (back passage) may also be involved. An infection caused by gonococcus bacteria, which is sometimes known as 'the clap'.  Young people are most commonly infected with current rates highest in males aged 20-24 years and females aged 16-19 years. The highest rates are found in London and predominantly urban areas. Very occasionally gonorrhoea can spread from the genital area into the joints. The disease is caused by a bacteria which causes inflammation of the glands. It primarily affects the urethra in men and the cervix in women. Gonorrhoea is an STD which is both treatable and preventable. Gonococcal infection of the eye is an ophthalmic emergency and needs urgent medical attention. It's also called the clap. A woman can pass gonorrhoea on to her baby at birth.

It produces inflammation and infection of the lining of the genital tract, throat, and rectum. In men infection of the urethra almost always results in a discharge and it is pretty obvious that there is something wrong. Gonorrhoea affects both men and women and is easily transmitted during vaginal intercourse. Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection and both men and women can become infected. You can get private help and treatment of you have an STI. We have then categorised each treatment or intervention according to its harms and benefits in those situations. Mutual masturbation between men may also allow the spread of infected genital secretions. It can also be transmitted from mother to baby at birth. This means that someone with a gonococcal infection in their genital area may not know they have it and can give it to someone else through sexual contact.

Treatment of Gonorrhoea

  • As a bacterial infection gonorrhoea can usually be treated with an antibiotic
  • All current and recent sexual partners of a person with gonorrhoea should be tested and treated to prevent re-infection and the further spread of disease. Treatment is offered whether or not they show any signs of infection.
  • A person with suspected gonorrhoea should also be tested for other sexually transmitted infections which may be present without symptoms.
  • Infertility from the fallopian tubes becoming damaged by scar tissue
  • However, there are many strains of gonorrhoea and some are now resistant to the commonly used antibiotics. This makes it important for anyone with suspected gonorrhoea to be properly investigated.
