Aldactazide Medication - Uses, Side Effects of Aldactazide Drug

Hydrochlorothiazide and spironolactone is used to treat fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or a kidney disorder called nephrotic syndrome. This medication also treats high blood pressure (hypertension). Aldactazide® is a diuretic combination, which is also known as a water pill. Aldactazide combines two diuretic drugs that help your body produce and eliminate more urine. Spironolactone, one of the ingredients, helps to minimize the potassium loss that can be caused by the hydrochlorothiazide component. It is commonly used to help reduce the amount of water in the body. Aldactazide does not cure high blood pressure; it merely keeps it under control. Aldactazide Dosage

The dose of potassium-sparing diuretic and hydrochlorothiazide combinations will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label . Use this medicine only as directed. Do not use more of it and do not use it more often than your doctor ordered.

Uses of Aldactazide

  • Diuretics help to reduce the amount of water in the body by acting on the kidneys to increase the flow of urine. This also helps to lower blood pressure.
  • Store the medicine at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
  • This drug is used to treat high blood pressure or water retention and swelling caused by conditions such as heart, kidney, and liver disease.
  • If you have high blood pressure, you must take Aldactazide regularly for it to be effective. Since blood pressure declines gradually, it may be several weeks before you get the full benefit of Aldactazide; and you must continue taking it even if you are feeling well.

Side Effects of Aldactazide

Abdominal cramps, breast development in males, change in potassium levels (leading to such symptoms as dry mouth, excessive thirst, drowsiness, excessive hairiness, fever, headache, hives, inflammation of blood vessels or lymph vessels, inflammation of the pancreas, irregular menstruation, kidney problems, lack of coordination, liver problems, loss of appetite, sensitivity to light, severe allergic reaction, sexual dysfunction, sluggishness, stomach bleeding, stomach inflammation, stomach ulcers, tingling or pins and needles, vertigo, vomiting, weakness, yellow eyes and skin, yellow vision are some of the side effects of this drug.

Warnings and precautions while taking Aldactazide:

  • If you are taking an ACE-inhibitor type of blood pressure medication such as Vasotec, Aldactazide should be used with extreme caution.
  • Hydrochlorothiazide (contained in this combination medicine) may raise blood sugar levels. While you are taking this medicine, be especially careful in testing for sugar in your blood or urine.
  • Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids you should drink. In some cases, drinking too much liquid can be as unsafe as not drinking enough.
  • To be sure this medication is not causing harmful effects, your blood will need to be tested on a regular basis. Your kidney or liver function may also need to be tested. It is important that you not miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.
  • Breast-feeding- Hydrochlorothiazide and spironolactone pass into breast milk. It is not known whether amiloride or triamterene passes into breast milk. Hydrochlorothiazide may also decrease the flow of breast milk. Therefore, you should avoid use of potassium-sparing diuretic and hydrochlorothiazide combinations during the first month of breast-feeding.
  • If you have liver or kidney disease or lupus erythematosus (a disease that causes skin eruptions), Aldactazide should be used with caution.

What to do if Overdose

  • An overdose of this medication is unlikely to occur. If you do suspect an overdose, call an emergency room or poison control left near you. If the drops have been ingested (taken by mouth), call an emergency left for advice.

What to do if miss a Dose

  • Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at the same time.
