Dandruff Overview & Information

The term dandruff generally refers to the condition of the skin wherein shiny, silvery scales separate from the scalp and collect amidst the hair. Dandruff refers to the flaking scalp which falls like a snow flakes and settles on one’s brows, shoulders and clothes. Fortunately, while the exact cause of dandruff is not know, there are some things you can do to reduce your risk of getting it, and effective treatments are available.

Dandruff Symptoms

The most obvious sign of dandruff, and perhaps the most embarrassing, is flaking and itching. It may also appear as lumps or crusts on the scalp.

Causes of Dandruff

Factors that can cause an Dandruff include:

  • Excessive use of hairsprays and gels.
  • impairment of general health,
  • toxic condition of the system brought on mainly by wrong feeding,
  • constipation and lowered vitality due to infectious diseases
  • Improper use of hair-coloring products or excessive use of electric hair curlers
  • Cold weather and dry indoor heating.
  • Tight fitting hats and scarves.
  • Infrequent shampooing of the hair or inadequate rinsing.
  • Stress, anxiety and tension.

Dandruff Treatment

Dandruff can be removed by massaging the hair for half an a hour with curd which has been kept in the open for three days, or with a few drops of lime juice mixed with amla juice every night, before going to bed. Another measure, which helps to counteract dandruff, is to dilute cider vinegar with an equal quantity of water and dab this on to the hair with cotton wool in between shampooing. Cider vinegar added to the final rinsing water after shampooing also helps to disperse dandruff. Treatment that can be done for Dandruff is-

  • Scalp treatment (ozone treatment).

  • Herbal shampoo.

  • Hot oil therapy.

  • Use of antiseptic lotion.

  • Henna treatment .

Dandruff seems to thrive in oily hair, so regular shampooing (daily, if your hair is oily) can help you fight it off. If you already have dandruff, washing your hair may help you keep the symptoms (the flakes) under control until it goes away. Massage your scalp so that you clean your skin, as well as your hair.
