Black Water Fever Overview & Information

Blackwater fever is a complication of malaria characterized by intravascular haemolysis , haemoglobinuria and kidney failure. Blackwater fever is much less common today than it was before 1950. Blackwater fever is the consequence of intravascular haemolysis and haematuria in Falciparum malaria.

Blackwater fever is a serious complication of malaria, but cerebral malaria has a higher mortality rate.

Black Water Fever Symptoms

Common symptoms of Black Water Fever include:

  • Anemia.
  • Stools, bloody.
  • Jaundice.
  • Convulsion.
  • Coma.
  • Sequential chills.
  • Headache.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Muscle pain.
  • Fever.
  • Sweating.
  • Abdominal pain (lever and spleen).

Black Water Fever Treatment

Treatment is directed at the underlying cause. Treatment may include:

  • Keep in mind that the fever is not the infection; the infection must be solved, as well as the fever.
  • Vitamin C and lemon juice are especially helpful. Other nutrients include vitamin A, B complex, B1, D, calcium, potassium, and sodium.
  • Wet compresses help reduce temperature. Remove them and apply new ones as he heats the old ones. Apply them to the forehead, wrists, and calves. Keep the rest of the body covered.
