Back Pain Overview & Information

Backache can be an indication of more serious underlying disease, especially kidney disease, so in every case the urine should be tested for protein and the temperature and pulse rate taken. Stress can cause backaches, but blaming back pain on stress can be dangerous. Back Pain Symptoms

In most cases of backache, the pain is usually felt either in the middle of the back or lower down. Common symptoms of Back Pain include:

  • Progressive weakness in the legs (cauda equina syndrome).
  • Severe, continuous abdominal and low back pain.
  • The pain may become worse with activity.

Causes of Back Pain

The main causes of backache and spondylosis are muscular tension, joint strain, poor posture and incorrect nutrition resulting from dietetic errors and lack of exercise. Factors that can cause an Back Pain include:

  • Pressure on a nerve root.
  • Poor posture.
  • Lack of exercise.
  • Standing or bending down for long periods.
  • Sitting in a chair that doesn't provide enough back support.
  • Sleeping on a mattress that doesn't provide enough back support.
  • Muscle strain.
  • Back injury.
  • Overuse.
  • Muscle disorders.

Back Pain Treatment

Treatment options include physical therapy, back exercises, weight reduction, steroid injections (epidural steroids), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, rehabilitation and limited activity. Drugs prescribed to relieve pain or relax muscles in backache disorders do not cure common back problems.It is essential that the patient should keep the spine straight at all times. If a board to lie on can be fitted to the bed, he should remain in bed in the position which is most comfortable.
